Myrrh oil

The myrrh tree (Commiphora myrrha) is endemic to the western region of Somalia. The desert-like extreme conditions of the open Acacia, Commiphora scrubland, characterised by heat and drought, cause the development of its natural ingredients such as curcerenes, furanoeudesma-1,3-dienes, lindestrenes and beta-elements. The valuable resin is periodically harvested by hand from the gnarled trunks by experienced collectors. The resin is gently distilled with steam to produce this very aromatic essential oil. The long experience, the special production process and the passion of the distillers are evident in the authentic flavour of this myrrh oil.

The myrrh tree (Commiphora myrrha) belongs to the balsam tree family (Burseraceae) and originally comes from eastern Africa, such as Yemen, Ethiopia and Somalia. The shrub or squat tree grows up to four metres tall and thrives on barren, sandy soils, forming small leathery leaves on its thorny branches. Delicate pink to yellow-coloured flowers grow before the rainy season, from which fruits develop after fertilisation. The liquid, less aromatic exudate emerges spontaneously from the bark, producing the hard, translucent, yellowish gum resin. Even in ancient times, the fragrant resin was highly sought after as an incense and perfume alongside frankincense.
