origin

Finest Origin - Highest Grade

The palo santo trees thrive in the wild, tropical nature of Piura, in northern Peru. The Pacific winds and tropical temperatures which are characteristic of the local climate are optimal for the growth of the trees and allow for the full development of valuable components such as limonene, alpha-terpineol and beta-bisabolene. The strong winds, which are caused by El Niño, break away old wood from the trees, which is then collected by hand and processed into essential oil by our experienced and passionate producer. Processing takes place in the producer's own steam distillery.

Farm

We source this essential oil from a small business founded in 2011 and located in the heart of Peru. The passionate employees are specialised in the cultivation of native plants, which they harvest by hand. They extract the essential oils from the plants via a gentle steam distillation process. The founders are committed to contributing to reforestation efforts as well as providing education and fair working conditions to the local indigenous peoples.

plant

Palo Santo

Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) belongs to the balsam family (Burseraceae) and is mainly found in South America, e.g. in Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru. Palo Santo trees are dioecious. The gnarled and slender tree has no leaves for most of the year. At the beginning of the rainy season, narrow, blue to green coloured leaves develop. Its fruits turn an intense red colour by the time they ripen. The tree has a natural lifespan of around 100 years and dies after being attacked by a certain type of insect. Traditionally, Palo Santo is used by shamans in their rituals as a ‘bridge’ between the world of the living and the realm of the spirits.
