The lemon trees are grown organically on small farms in Sicily, Italy, and hand-harvested in summer when they are fully ripe. Sicily is known for the cultivation of citrus fruits including mandarin, yellow and red orange, and lemon. The Mediterranean climate and mineral-rich soils offer optimal growing conditions for the trees, allowing the fruits to develop their intense flavours and other components. Following the harvest, which takes place from October to June, the fruits are brought to our facility, where their peels are cold pressed. The farmers' passion and experience is reflected by the fine aromas of the oils.
We source this essential oil from a small, family-run producer based in Sicily. The company was founded in the 1970s and specialises in the cultivation of citrus fruits. They first began cultivation according to organic standards in 2002, but have adapted and expanded their land since then. The mineral-rich soils and the Mediterranean climate, as well as the producer's many years of experience, combine to create high-quality essential oils. The essential oils are extracted via cold pressing in our own facility, and are certified organic.
The lemon tree belongs to the Rutaceae family. It grows as a large evergreen shrub and has thorny leaf axils. In spring and summer, it is covered with fragrant white flowers, from which the yellow fruits grow. Originally from South East Asia, the lemon tree is now also found in Mediterranean countries with a similar climate, e.g. Spain and Italy.
