These lemongrass plants (Cymbopogon citratus) are organically grown in the tropical nature of the Uva province in southern Sri Lanka. The lemongrass native to this region thrives in nutrient-rich soil and hot tropical temperatures with high humidity. These optimal growing conditions result in the development of aromatic citrus-fresh aromas such as geranial and neral. To produce the essential oil, the fresh lemongrass leaves are harvested by hand every 4 to 6 months after planting and are distilled on site using gentle steam distillation.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) belongs to the large family of sweet grasses (Poaceae) and is originally from eastern India. Cymbopogon citratus, also known as West Indian lemongrass, is native to Sri Lanka. The perennial plant grows in clumps and has hollow, tube-like shoots and upright to curved, linear, lemony-scented, rough-edged leaves, some with a purple tinge. Loose, branched panicles of flowers form in early summer. Lemongrass can grow up to 1.5m tall. Fresh lemongrass is well known in Asian cuisine; it is used in Ayurvedic medicine for infectious diseases and fever and is traditionally used for stomach upsets and nausea. Lemongrass is often used to perfume soaps or cosmetics and helps to repel insects.
