Wormwood is a plant belonging to the species Artemisia afra. Our wormwood is cultivated according to organic standards in the Cape of Good Hope, a coastal area in the Western Cape region of South Africa. There, a temperate Mediterranean climate combined with cold, stormy winds from the Atlantic Ocean prevail in spring and summer. These climatic conditions as well as mineral-rich soils offer optimal growing conditions for the plant, allowing for the development of the active substances for which wormwood is renowned. These include 1,8-cineole, camphor and camphene. The fresh, aromatic leaves and twigs are harvested in late summer and spring and the ultra-pure essential oil is obtained via gentle steam distillation.

The family business was founded in South Africa in 1993. It specialises in the cultivation, conventional and controlled organic, and wild collection of partly endemic essential oil plants. The cultivated plants thrive on their large farm near the coast, where they are harvested at the optimal harvest time and sorted as well as processed in their own production facility. The processing of the plants takes place in their own steam distillation plant. The quality of the products is high and certified. The family business cooperates worldwide and locally with South African tea and cosmetic companies.
African Wormwood
African wormwood (Artemisia afra) belongs to the Asteraceae family, and is widespread in Africa. Artemisia afra is the only species of Artemisia in the genus of about 500 species that is endemic to Africa. The silver-grey plant has dark green, fern-like leaves, and grows to between 60cm and 2m tall. In the wild, it grows in areas with a lot of moisture and can be found at altitudes from 20 to 2400m. As one of the oldest and best-known medicinal plants in Africa, Artemisia afra is often used there as a natural remedy for colds, loss of appetite, headaches and malaria.
