Located on the Cape of Good Hope, the province has a dry Mediterranean climate, with cold, blustery winds from the Atlantic Ocean in spring and summer. These special climatic conditions, coupled with the area's mineral-rich soils, create the ideal conditions for the development of the plant's special aromatic compounds, including trimethyl-heptadiene, carvone and limonene. Farm
The verbena used for this essential oil comes from a family farm founded in South Africa in 1993. The farm specialises in conventional and organic cultivation as well as the wildcrafting of essential oil plants, with many of their plants being indigenous to the region. The cultivated plants thrive on a large farm near the coast, where they are harvested during the spring and autumn months before being steam distilled into our essential oil at the farm's on-site distillery. Their premium plants and extracts are highly sought after; used by local South African tea and cosmetics manufacturers and around the world.
Verbena
African verbena (Lippia javanica) belongs to the Verbenaceae family. Found across South Africa and as far north as Kenya, up to 1,030 different species grow around the region's tropical and subtropical zones. The African verbena shrub produces small, cream-coloured flowers in dense clusters throughout the year, particularly in summer. Growing to heights of up to 2m, the plant produces square-shaped stems and hairy leaves. The leaves emit a citrusy fragrance when rubbed between the fingers, making it one of the most aromatic native shrubs in South Africa. In herbal medicine, the plant is used for coughs, fevers and colds as well as for making an effective insect repellent.
