The black spruce thrives in the boreal coniferous forest in the Canadian region of Eeyou Istchee James Bay. This region is characterised by a continental climate with strong temperature fluctuations, from 20°C in the short summers to -40°C in winter. These extreme climatic conditions cause the trees to develop complex, natural aromas such as bornyl acetate, camphene, α- and β-pinene as well as δ3-carene. The production of the essential oil, as a sustainable by-product of the timber industry, is regulated by a precise and strict legal framework of the province of Québec. The fresh twigs with needles are collected throughout the year, crushed and distilled with gentle steam while still fresh to produce this very aromatic essential oil.

Black Spruce
The black spruce (Picea mariana) belongs to the pine family (Pinaceae). It is native to North America, where it is mainly found from the far north of Canada to the edge of the low Arctic tundra and in the northeast of the United States. Of the 40 species of spruce, it is the most resistant to very cold climates; according to some studies, it can withstand temperatures as low as -60°C. The tree can reach a height of up to 25m and its bark is reddish-brown when young and darker with age. The spruce has grey-green needles that are densely arranged on the branches. It produces small purple cones as fruit, which then turn light brown in colour. The aborigines of Canada used the cones, needles or resin of the black spruce for various applications, including diarrhoea, burns or colds.
