Dried Organic
Pineapple Rings
Soft, Unsweetened
These dried organic pineapple rings come from hand-harvested fully ripened pineapples (Smooth Cayenne & MD2 varieties) in West Africa. The fruits have been cultivated in a sustainable farming system in cooperation with local smallholders, where they are harvested only once per year to ensure a naturally long time to sun ripen. They are then gently dried to allow the flavour and nutrients to fully develop, resulting in an aromatic, fruity sweetness with a typical mild acidity. These soft pineapple rings are rich in vitamin C, minerals and enzymes (such as bromelain). Vegan, unsweetened, no additives. 2x200g

How are we different?
The pineapples used for our organic pineapple rings come from the best growing region in West Africa on natural, certified organic plantations by small fruit farmers in the region. The cultivation is supported by the sustainable block farming model, which promotes regional development and the expansion of organic farming. In addition, the farmers are trained, supported and paid fairly in order to ensure they can produce a stable yield and maintain their livelihoods. This sets our dried fruits apart from other producers who source their pineapples from large plantations that employ pesticides and undignified working conditions.
The two most important and widespread pineapple varieties in the world, Smooth Cayenne and MD2, are grown on small plantations. The mixture of the two varieties results in a balance between aromatic and sour (Smooth Cayenne) and sweet pineapple pieces (MD2).
As the fruits take 13–15 months to reach harvest maturity, each pineapple plant can only be harvested once per year. Fully ripened fruits are harvested and immediately processed locally instead of being exported as raw goods, which results in a loss of flavour. Many pineapple products on the market are made from these unripe pineapples that are harvested too early in order to lengthen their shelf life. Pineapples continue to ripen after harvesting, but barely develop any flavour and do not develop a high vitamin content. Sugar and artificial flavours and sweeteners are often added to these pineapples to ensure a "typical" pineapple taste. However, our pineapple rings are made of 100% pure, dried fruit with no need for additives such as sugar, sweeteners or preservatives.
We use a particularly high-quality, airtight flavour protection bag with a zipper. A 7-fold coating with high barrier security provides the contents with the best possible protection against moisture, oxidation and the effects of harmful substances.

Pineapple
Pineapple
The pineapple (Ananas comosus) belongs to the Bromeliaceae family. It is an unusual plant in that it produces only one pineapple fruit, which grows for a full 13–15 months before it is ready for harvesting. The pineapple consists of an intertwined berry-fruit cluster and a core. The term "comosus" (part of the scientific name) is the Latin word for "tuft," which refers to the characteristic leafy tuft of the fruit.
Pineapple cultivation has a long history. The plant was used by the indigenous peoples of South America for food and wine as well as a natural remedy. Portuguese sailors helped the fruit gain global popularity; however, the fruit's relatively short shelf life made it difficult to trade. This led to the pineapple becoming a status symbol in Europe, where cultivation of the plants became popular among British aristocrats in the 17th century.
Several varieties of pineapple exist, including Smooth Cayenne, MD2, Spanish, Queen, Pernambuco and Perolera. The Smooth Cayenne variety is one of the top cultivars, producing pineapples weighing up to 4kg each; it is characterised by its aromatic flavour and light yellow flesh. The MD2 variety is another important cultivar, which is characterised by a sweeter flavour and lower acidity.
Region and Processing
Region and Processing
Following the sustainable block farming model, our supplier works with many local farmers, supporting regional development and the organic farming industry in West Africa. As the fruits take 13–15 months to reach harvest maturity, each pineapple plant can only be harvested once per year. Cultivation is therefore planned in such a way that one harvest can take place in spring and a second in autumn.
After washing and peeling, the pineapples are de-stemmed, sliced and air-dried. This gentle process preserves their full flavour, their pale yellow flesh and their valuable vitamin, mineral and enzyme content. The dried pieces have a soft texture, and the mixture of the two varieties results in a well-balanced, sweet and sour flavour.
