The mountain pine (Pinus mugo) population is a remnant of the last ice age and often forms the upper tree line. With their low, compact growth, they characterise the landscape of the Alpine mountain regions and, due to their longevity and robustness, play an important role in protecting against erosion and avalanches. In order to preserve the pastureland typical of the landscape, local forestry authorities working in cooperation with farmers regularly grant local oil producers permission to cut mountain pine stands. This is done manually with a small machete. The fresh branches and twigs are then bundled and taken down to the valley and to local ‘oil distilleries’, where they are chopped and distilled to extract the valuable essential oil.

This family-run company has been producing essential oils and herbal products for over 110 years and has been certified organic since 1995. The plants used to produce the essential oils come either from the company's own organic cultivation, from Demeter-certified cultivation by a regional producer, or from the company's own controlled wild collection, which always follows the principles of sustainable forestry. Mountain Pine
The mountain pine (Pinus mugo), also known as the dwarf mountain pine, belongs to the pine family (Pinaceae) and is an impressive symbol of the alpine power of the mountain world. It grows as low, dense dwarf pine with flexible branches that often lie on the ground and is only a few metres high in order to withstand extreme conditions such as strong winds, snow and cold. It can live for over 200 years. Its essential oil, extracted from the resinous needles and twigs, is rich in monoterpenes such as alpha- and beta-pinene and limonene. This composition gives the oil its characteristic fresh, resinous, forest scent. In alpine folk medicine, the oil has been used for centuries for inhalation and rubbing in cases of colds. It has also been used successfully for rheumatism, muscle and nerve pain. Mountain pine is a valuable source that makes the pure, authentic energy of the mountains directly accessible.
