Known as the "berry of happiness" in China, the goji berry is the fruit of the common buckthorn (Lycium barbarum) and Chinese buckthorn (Lycium chinense). The term "goji berry" is the translation of the Chinese name "ningxiá gouqi," meaning "gouqi from Ningxiá," a region in northwestern China. The buckthorn, also known as sandthorn or seaberry, belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and is highly sought after as both an ornamental and edible plant. The deciduous shrub has been naturalised in Central Europe for so long that its original distribution range is difficult to trace. It likely extended from Southeast Europe to China. Goji berries are rich in valuable natural compounds such as carotenoids.
