The clove thrives in regions of the central plateau of Sri Lanka. This region of the tropical climate zone with a high rainfall rate provides the ideal growing conditions for this native spice plant. The clear, humid and hot air and the nutrient-rich soil result in the full development of valuable natural ingredients and flavours in the plant, such as eugenol, beta-caryophyllene or eugenyl acetate. The clove buds are harvested when the petals change colour from olive green to yellow-pink. The flower clusters are harvested by hand together with the stems. The bud and stem are separated, sun-dried and distilled using gentle steam distillation.

Clove tree
The clove tree (Eugenia caryophyllus) belongs to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) and originally comes from the spice islands, the Moluccas in South-East Asia. It is an evergreen tree with a height of up to 12 metres. It produces long, pointed leathery leaves and aromatic yellowish-green, later red flowers in umbels. The intensely aromatic clove is a popular spice and remedy in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. It is often used as a household remedy for toothache due to the anaesthetic effect of the natural component eugenol.
