The blood orange trees thrive on a certified organic farm located at an altitude of approximately 3,000m, near Mt. Etna, in Sicily. In this volcanic region, with mineral-rich soils and fluctuating temperatures which are characteristic of the Mediterranean climate, the trees have optimal growing conditions which allow for the full development of their aromas and the deeply red colour of the fruits. The fruits are carefully hand-harvested from December to March. After having been sorted and cleaned, the fresh peels are cold-pressed on-site.
We source this essential oil from a small, family-run producer based in Sicily. The company was founded in the 1970s and specialises in the cultivation of citrus fruits. They first began cultivation according to organic standards in 2002, but have adapted and expanded their land since then. The mineral-rich soils and the Mediterranean climate, as well as the producer's many years of experience, combine to create high-quality essential oils. The essential oils are extracted via cold pressing in our own facility, and are certified organic.
The blood orange belongs to the Rutaceae family, and is slightly smaller than the traditional orange. The blood orange tree is a rounded shrub with 5-15cm long, oval-shaped leaves. In spring, its fragrant white flowers, which measure around 4cm in size, bloom. The flowers then develop into deep red oranges. The blood orange is endemic to South East Asia, but is now also often cultivated in the Mediterranean region.
The fruity-sweet aroma promotes feelings of joy and serenity, and has balancing and harmonising properties.
