Finest Origin - Highest Grade

These yuzu plants (Citrus x junos) thrive in Kochi Prefecture along the Shimanto River, also known in Japan as 'the last pristine river'. Our essential oil comes from Yuzu trees, also known as Mishō-Yuzu (Japanese: Mishō = seedling). These trees grown from seed take up to 20 years to bear fruit. The mountainous and up to 84% forested Kōchi Prefecture offers the ideal conditions for the development of the complex natural ingredients in the fruit, such as D-Limonene, γ-Terpinene or β-Phellandrene. The fruits are harvested during the winter months by farmers from small family businesses and the complex aromatic essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the skins.

Farm

The Japanese Kōchi Prefecture-based producer of our premium essential oil has been making its own essential oils from only native plants, sourced from small family-run farms in the region, since 1998. The company's ethos is based on sustainable and environmentally responsible business practices and as such all aspects of production are carefully designed for sustainability. The essential oils are obtained on site using gentle steam distillation in a stainless steel tank.

Yuzu

Yuzu (Citrus x junos) is a cross between the Ichang lemon (Citrus ichangensis) and the sour mandarine (Citrus reticulata var. austera) and belongs to the rue family (Rutaceae). Originally from East Asia, yuzu was cultivated in China for its prized aroma and made its way to Japan via the Korean peninsula in the 8th century. The evergreen, thorny shrub or small tree can reach a height of 4 to 8 meters. In spring it bears small white flowers with a very aromatic scent, which develop into yellow or orange colored fruits with an uneven skin in autumn. Yuzu is a very slow-growing plant, so it takes about 20 years from seed-laying to the first fruit harvest. The trees grown from the seeds are called misho-yuzu.

Aroma

The complex citric aroma gives inner strength and centers. Like a balm for the soul, it gives comfort and gives strength and optimism for a new beginning.
