How are we different?

Vitamin D does not take effect alone, but rather within a closely knit system that is dependent on numerous other nutrients. Our Vitamin D Balance complex effectively combines all the cofactors of the vitamin D system into a single supplement. The individual nutrients are present in a precisely balanced ratio that is maintained across a range of dosages.

All nutrients are provided as carefully selected premium active ingredients: plant-based vitamin D; vitamin K2 in the form of 100% all-trans MK-7 (original K2VITAL®); magnesium from red algae (Lithothamnion calcareum) and in the form of magnesium malate, magnesium glycinate and magnesium oxide; organic calcium from red algae (Lithothamnion calcareum) and calcium-L-lactate, calcium-citrate-malate; vitamin A from retinyl palmitate; highly bioactive zinc chelate in the form of zinc bisglycinate; and boron from sodium borate. Together, these nutrients comprise a highly effective complex that covers all cofactors involved in the vitamin D system.

When formulating this product, we considered not only the ideal ratio of the individual ingredients, but also their stability. For example, we use a special and highly stable vitamin K2 active ingredient that has been microencapsulated because vitamin K2 is otherwise unstable in the presence of calcium and magnesium and would lose its effectiveness.

For the capsule shells we use custom-made HPMC capsules that, unlike most other HPMC and pullulan capsules on the market, are 100% free from controversial additives such as carrageenans and PEG. We use amber glass jars for the packaging of this product.

Effects

Vitamin D

Vitamin D3 naturally occurs almost exclusively in animal sources, particularly in fish, dairy products, eggs and meat. Plants, such as lichens and various fungi, contain only very small amounts of the much less effective form of vitamin D2.

Vitamin D plays a very important role in the body. It is one of the few vitamins that is not absorbed directly from food, but rather produced by skin cells from sunlight. It is not a vitamin in the traditional sense of the word, but rather a pro-hormone. In contrast to many other vitamins, vitamin D is converted into an important hormone which regulates cell functioning and bodily processes. Almost all bodily cells have special receptors for the vitamin D hormone that are dependent on sufficient supply.

Vitamin D is still being intensively researched. New mechanisms of action of this fascinating vitamin are discovered almost every year. So far, the following statements on vitamin D have been released by the EU (EFSA):

Vitamin D contributes to:

  • Normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus
  • Normal calcium levels in the blood
  • The maintenance of bones
  • The maintenance of normal muscle function
  • The maintenance of healthy teeth
  • Normal function of the immune system
  • Cell division

Dosage

Directions

Take 1 capsule with 200ml water daily.

Daily Requirements

The contradictory information surrounding daily requirements for vitamin D intake can be confusing. Daily recommendations vary greatly between different organisations and governing bodies.

For example, the EU recommends a daily intake of 200 IU for adults, while the German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends 800 IU. However, numerous researchers and nonprofit organisations believe that these recommendations are too low and are not enough to prevent deficiency. An intake of at least 1500–2000 IU or 3000–6000 IU are recommended by the American Endocrine Society and the Vitamin D Council (USA), respectively.

Daily Cofactor Requirements

Vitamin K2
Although the German Nutrition Society recommends a total daily intake of at least 70µg, there are currently no recommendations for vitamin K2 specifically.

Note: Recent research shows that vitamin K1 and vitamin K2 have distinctly different profiles in terms of their effects. Vitamin K2 requirements have not yet been scientifically established, but are likely higher than those listed by the DGE. A complete carboxylation of Matrix GLA protein (MGP) and osteocalcin, which is the main function of vitamin K2, can be observed in doses starting from 100µg per day.

Calcium
The European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends a daily intake of 800mg, whereas the German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends an intake of 1000mg.

Magnesium
EFSA recommends a daily intake of 250mg, whereas the DGE recommends an intake of 400mg.

Zinc
EFSA recommends a daily intake of 10mg, whereas the DGE recommends an intake of 10–16mg.

Beta-Carotene
EFSA recommends a daily intake of 4.8mg, whereas the DGE recommends an intake of 6mg.

Boron
There is no official recommended intake for boron.

Food Supplement

Do not exceed the recommended daily intake. Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced, varied diet and healthy lifestyle. Keep out of reach of young children.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.
