Lecithin is a component of animal and plant cell membranes and belongs to the group of phospholipids. In technical terminology it is referred to as phosphatidylcholine. Phospholipids are composed of fatty acids, glycerol, phosphoric acid and choline and occur naturally in the human body. Lecithin was first isolated from egg yolk in 1846 by Theodor Nicolas Gobley. Gobley gave his discovery the name "Lekithos" (the Greek word for "egg yolk"), which later became the modern term "lecithin".
