These wild cistuses originate from pristine nature at an elevation of 400-600 metres in central Portugal. This natural environment provides an ideal climate for the native common gum cistus with its characteristic sticky, aromatic resin, labdanum. The seasonal temperature fluctuations of cold nights and hot, dry days result in a concentrated and rich development of valuable ingredients and aromas such as resins and pinenes. The stems and leaves are harvested by hand and gently distilled in the local distillery.
The producer of our high-quality essential oil is a small, nature-loving, young family business in Portugal. The company specialises in wild collections and the collection of damaged wood from native essential oil plants. The essential oil is extracted using gentle steam distillation in a stainless steel tank. The low water pressure and therefore gentle, careful distillation results in an near complete extraction of the valuable aroma substances of the plants. All oils distilled there are certified with the EU organic seal.
The cistus (Cistus ladanifer) belongs to the cistus family (Cistaceae). Originally, the cistus is found in the Mediterranean south-west of Europe, such as Portugal, as far north as Africa. The common gum cistus is an upright shrub with aromatic, linear-lanceolate, sticky, dark green leaves. The shrub reaches a height of up to 2 metres and can grow 1.5 metres wide. Its large, white flowers have a yellow centre and may have a chimney-red spot at the base of the petals.
The herbaceous scent of rock rose strengthens resilience, brings self-confidence and conveys a feeling of inner strength and stability.
