The key lime trees thrive on a certified organic farm located in the southern region of the Mediterranean island of Sicily. In this warm climate, with Mediterranean winds, the trees have optimal growing conditions which allow for the full development of aromas in their blossoms and fruits. The fruits are carefully hand-harvested by experienced farmers between August and October. After having been sorted and cleaned, the fresh peels are cold-pressed on-site.
We source this essential oil from a small, family-run producer based in Sicily. The company was founded in the 1970s and specialises in the cultivation of citrus fruits. They first began cultivation according to organic standards in 2002, but have adapted and expanded their land since then. The mineral-rich soils and the Mediterranean climate, as well as the producer's many years of experience, combine to create high-quality essential oils. The essential oils are extracted via cold pressing in our own facility, and are certified organic.
The fragrant key lime belongs to the Rutaceae family, and is predominantly found in Mexico, Central America and the West Indies. Nowadays, however, the fruit is also cultivated in other regions which have similar climatic conditions, including Spain and Italy.
The evergreen key lime tree grows up to 5m high and grows leathery, dark green leaves. It produces fragrant, white flowers and bears fruits which vary in ripeness throughout the year.
The herbaceous, tangy and green sweetness of this oil is uplifting and energising, and promotes concentration.
