Hiba trees grow in Aomori Prefecture, which is located at the northern end of the main Japanese island of Honshu. The rainy region has many coastal areas as well as mountains – these climatic conditions provide ideal conditions for the trees to develop their main aromatic components, such as thujopsene, cedrol, cuprenes and himachalene. This essential hiba oil is derived from residual wood shavings from the timber industry, which are gently distilled with steam in a stainless steel tank.

Hiba
Hiba (Thujopsis dolabrata) is the only species of the genus Thujopsis in the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is a dense, slow-growing, pyramidal, evergreen tree that can grow up to 30m high in its native habitat in Japan. The rigid leaves ('asunaro-yo') are a glossy emerald green on the upper side and have striking faded green spots on the underside; they have traditionally been used to treat jaundice. The Hiba tree is a valued ornamental tree in Japan and can often be found near temples and in gardens. Along with Hinoki, Sawara cypress, umbrella fir and the Japanese tree of life, this tree is one of the "Five Sacred Trees of Kiso," which were originally reserved for imperial use in ancient feudal Japan. Hiba wood is used in many temples and shrines due to its resilience. The essential oil, which is distilled from the wood, is valued in aromatherapy for its insect-repelling, antibacterial and antifungal properties.
