The common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis), also known as the summer star, Stolzer Heinrich or Rapontika, is a naturalised neophyte in Germany. Like the Missouri evening primrose and common evening primrose, the biennial belongs to the evening primrose family (Onagraceae). Originally from North America, it was brought to Europe as an ornamental plant at the beginning of the 17th century and cultivated there in gardens and parks. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it already had a permanent place in cottage gardens. It then went wild and is now widespread throughout most of Europe. It grows wild on railway embankments, embankments, roadsides and fallow land. Its name comes from the fact that the plant only unfurls its large yellow petals in the dark and exudes a distinctive odour.
