Elemi (Canarium luzonicum) is an evergreen tropical rainforest tree from the Burseraceae family, the same family to which frankincense and myrrh belong. Elemi is native to the tropical forests of the Philippines and Moluccas. The tree naturally exudes resins when infested by parasites, but this resin production is also triggered by the "tapping technique" used by local farmers, which involves making incisions in the bark as fresh leaves emerge between January and June. From these incisions flows the white resin, which turns brown upon contact with the air, and is subsequently harvested. A mature tree can produce up to five kilograms of elemi per year. The resin is collected, cleaned, and processed by our renowned manufacturer into this aromatic essential oil through gentle steam distillation. Since the 16th century, the tree's resin, essential oil, and tincture have been used in herbal medicine and pharmacy, often listed in pharmacopoeias under wound-healing salves and balm formulations.
