How are we different?
Red Orange Complex® is derived from the juice of hand-harvested, pigmented Sicilian Moro, Tarocco and Sanguinello blood oranges. Water-extracted to preserve the valuable polyphenols, organic acids and vitamins, the extract is standardised to 5.6% anthocyanins, 17% flavanones, 3.6% hydroxycinnamic acids and 12% vitamin C.
For the capsule shells we use custom-made HPMC capsules that, unlike most other HPMC and pullulan capsules on the market, are 100% free from controversial additives such as carrageenans and PEG. We use environmentally friendly amber glass for the packaging of this product.
Blood orange
The blood orange is grown in the Mediterranean, especially in Sicily. The best-known varieties include Moro, Sanguinello and Tarocco. The "Moro" variety comes from the fertile slopes of the Etna volcano in the south-east of the island. For the rich red colour of the juice, flesh and, depending on the variety, the skin, the blood orange needs cold nights and warm days. When it is fifteen to twenty degrees centigrade during the day and temperatures drop to two to zero degrees centigrade at night, anthocyanins are formed. The colouring substances are deposited and provide the rich red colour. The Sanguinello orange, which ripens from February to April, has been one of the most popular varieties in European markets in recent years due to the intense colour of its juice. According to legend, the Tarocco blood orange got its name from a farmer who cried out in amazement when he saw this particular orange for the first time. In the language of the time, "un tarocco" meant "a trump card" and the farmer is said to have immediately recognised the significance of this special orange. The Tarocco originated in the 19th century from a natural mutation of the Sanguinello blood orange. Compared to this and the Moro blood orange, the Tarocco is considered to be the sweetest and most flavourful blood orange.
