How are we different?
Our maca powder is sourced exclusively from Junín, Peru, a traditional region for maca cultivation with the only natural distribution of maca in the world. There, the maca plant grows at an altitude of 4050–4200m on a small slope near the town of San Pedro de Cajas (population 15,300) in the province of Tarma. This traditional growing region is only a few kilometres away from Junín National Reserve and the mountain lake Junín, the second largest lake in Peru. Lake Junín and the surrounding area have a particularly rainy microclimate and a soil composition that differs from the rest of the Junín region (among other particularities, it has a 10-fold higher magnesium content).
The maca roots are harvested exclusively by hand and sun-dried when conditions allow. Drying the roots at temperatures below 45°C maximally preserves their nutrients and results in a high-quality and raw product. This maca powder is non-GMO, 100% natural and free from additives.

Maca
Maca
Maca
The maca plant (Lepidium meyenii) belongs to the cruciferous family and the cress genus (Lepidium). It is thus related to watercress, garden cress, rapeseed and mustard. Maca, also known as Peruvian ginseng, is native to the Peruvian Andes, where it has been cultivated at high altitudes for about 2000 years. It is considered a complete food in the Andes and is used as a tonic for their armed forces. Mainly the tubers of the maca plant are used; they taste slightly sweet and can be boiled or slowly baked in the oven. The region's traditional dishes also include a sweet and very aromatic porridge made from maca, known as mazamorra.
Red Maca
Maca varieties, along with their differing colouration, have distinct characteristics due to the unique spectrum of ingredients they each contain. The main varieties of maca are yellow, black and red, but the roots are not easily distinguishable when ground into a powder. Only red maca is contained here.
Raw
Maca products are available in a variety of preparations and dosages. Our maca powder is a 1:1 raw powder from whole ground maca root, sun- and machine-dried below 45°C.
Cultivation & Processing
Cultivation & Processing
Cultivation
The maca plant from which our powder is made grows in its traditional region of Junín, Peru at an altitude of 4050–4200m above sea level on a gentle slope near the mountain town of San Pedro de Cajas (population 15,300) in the province of Tarma. Due to the altitude, it is exposed to extreme climatic conditions: strong temperature fluctuations, strong winds and intense UV radiation. The growing region is only a few kilometres away from Junín National Reserve and Lake Junín, Peru's second largest lake. The area surrounding Lake Junín has a particularly rainy microclimate and a soil composition that differs from the rest of the Junín region, including a 10-fold higher magnesium content. The Junín region harbours the world's only natural distribution of maca plants.
Harvested by Hand & Gently Processed
The maca plants are harvested by hand from the end of May through August and sun dried on large tarpaulins when conditions allow. The tuberous root is then disinfected with ozonated water, dried at low temperatures (never exceeding 45°C) and ground into a fine powder.

Uses

Directions
Suitable for daily consumption. Quick dissolving formula making it ideal to mix in smoothies, shakes, hot and cold drinks, muesli and (gluten-free) baking.
Recommended serving: 1–3 teaspoons (3–9g) daily.
Contraindications
There are no restrictions on the consumption of raw maca powder. Only those with a sensitive digestive system should be careful with the dosage due to the hard-to-digest starches and mucous membrane-irritating mustard oil glycosides. Alternateively, the gelatinised maca mix can be used, as the hard-to-digest starch has been removed via a short and strong heating process. This results in an easily digestible powder with concentrated ingredients.
