How are we different?
Our mulberries come from certified organic cultivation in Turkey, where the climate provides ideal conditions for the trees to flourish and produce naturally sweet fruits. Sourced from the region's native mulberry tree stock, the berries are cultivated without the use of any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers. Furthermore, our manufacturer sends every harvested batch to an independent laboratory for pesticide analysis to ensure the product is completely free from contamination and environmental toxins.
At the time of harvest, sheets are stretched under the trees to prevent severe bruising as the fruit falls. The berries dry directly on the tree using only sun and fresh air, meaning they are not dried post-harvest. Some manufacturers dry their berries in ovens at higher temperatures to accelerate the process, but this results in a loss of natural flavour. Consequently, artificial flavours, sugar or sweeteners are often added to guarantee a "typical" mulberry taste; however, our white mulberries consist of 100% pure, dried raw-food-quality fruit with no added sugar, sweeteners or preservatives.
We use a particularly high-quality, airtight pouch with a zip closure. Its high-grade protective barrier provides optimal protection against moisture, oxidation and pollutants.
Mulberries
Mulberry trees (Morus genus) can grow up to 15m tall. The leaves of the tree used to be highly valued as they were used to breed silkworms. Today, the sweet, raisin-like flavour of the fruit is particularly popular, as it naturally contains valuable nutrients and phytochemicals.
Three species of mulberry are particularly well known in Europe, all of which bear edible fruit: the black mulberry (Morus nigra), the red mulberry (Morus rubra) and the white mulberry (Morus alba). The fruits, which are reminiscent of blackberries in shape, are clusters of many small stone fruits. The fresh berries differ mainly in flavour: fresh, ripe fruits taste very sweet and juicy, while the dried fruits become firm and have a sweet flavour similar to honey.
Cultivation & Processing
Our supplier works with independent farmers in order to support regional development in southeastern Turkey, where the subtropical, warm climate is ideal for producing dried mulberries. The mulberries used for this product are not harvested while fresh and then dried, but instead are left on the tree, where they are able to dry out in the sun, solidify, then fall to the ground.
Because mulberries tend to dry and solidify at different rates, the farmers lay large white sheets under the trees to catch the dried fruits when they fall. These sheets protect the mulberries from being contaminated or damaged by the ground below. The harvesting process takes around 2–3 days, depending on the size of the farm.
