How are we different?

Our tiger nuts come from traditional, certified organic cultivation in Niger. They're grown using only natural rainfall, with no additional irrigation. This natural growing method combined with abundant summer sunshine gives the small tubers their rich nutrient profile and distinctive sweet and nutty flavour. Tiger nuts thrive particularly well in dry climates, making them a popular local food. The decision to forgo additional irrigation is also a deliberate one, helping to protect the surrounding environment from water scarcity. The tiger nuts aren't roasted, but gently sun-dried instead, preserving their full raw quality and the complete spectrum of valuable compounds.

Our supplier is a family-run business with over 20 years of history, formed as a cooperative of many experienced smallholder farmers from the region. The company not only protects the environment but also supports local social development through wages that significantly exceed the industry-standard minimum wage.

Tiger Nuts

The tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus), also known as chufa, is botanically not a true nut. Native to tropical and subtropical regions, this plant belongs to the sedge family and forms small tuberous swellings at its roots, known as tiger nuts. Their sweet flavour, reminiscent of almonds or hazelnuts, is what gives them their name.

The dried, nutrient-rich tubers have a very long shelf life, which is why they're widely cultivated in their native growing regions and remain a traditional part of the local diet.

Cultivation & Processing

Our tiger nuts are cultivated by experienced farmers in Niger, where rainwater naturally supplies the crops with all the water they need. The plants develop the small tubers known as tiger nuts over the warm summer months. Between December and January, the ripe tiger nuts are harvested and dried in the sun. They are then gently removed from their shells.

The whole tiger nuts are suitable as a snack, or as an ingredient in any recipe. It's recommended to soak the tiger nuts in water overnight before eating or further preparation.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.
