Organic Tiger Nuts Whole

How are we different?

Our tiger nuts are sourced from certified organic cultivation in Niger, where they are a popular food among locals. They are cultivated according to traditional methods, using only rainwater and no additional irrigation, and thrive in the hot, dry climate. The intense sun during the summer months in Niger contributes to the abundance of nutrients found within the small tubers, and their uniquely sweet and nutty flavour.

Our supplier is a family-run collective of local farmers that has existed for over 20 years. The collective not only works to protect nature through its sustainable cultivation practices, but also pays fair wages which far exceed the industry's minimum wage requirements.

The tiger nuts are not roasted, but instead gently sun-dried. This allows them to retain their full raw food quality and the entire spectrum of valuable ingredients.

Tiger Nuts

The tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus), also known as yellow nutsedge or earth almond, is technically not a nut. It was given this name on account of its sweet, nutty flavour, which is reminiscent of almonds or hazelnuts. The plant, which is native to tropical and subtropical regions and belongs to the sourgrass family, forms the tubers known as tiger nuts on its roots.

When dried, the nutritious tubers have a very long shelf life, which is why they are widely cultivated in their native growing regions and are often used in traditional cuisine.

Cultivation & Processing

Our tiger nuts are cultivated by experienced farmers in Niger, where rainwater naturally supplies the crops with all the water they need. The plants develop the small tubers known as tiger nuts over the warm summer months. Between December and January, the ripe tiger nuts are harvested and dried in the sun. They are then gently removed from their shells.
