How are we different?

We use only male plants for our Chinese yam powder. The plants are grown in sandy soil which contains quartz. They are cultivated in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania according to strict guidelines which prevent them from crossing with any other species. The result is an ultra-pure end product.

The producer has been cultivating the plants without pesticides since 2007. Following harvesting, the roots are gently dried at 38°C for 48 hours. They are then carefully milled using a hand-operated grain mill. The product is also filled into its packaging by hand.

Chinese Yam

Chinese Yam

Known as nagaimo in Japan as well as "cinnamon vine" or "air potato" in the United States, the Chinese yam (Dioscorea batatas) is popular in Asia as both a cooking ingredient as well as a natural home remedy for indigestion and women's reproductive health. Historically, this yam has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat ailments of the stomach, spleen, and kidneys. For this reason it is also known by the name shanyao (Chinese: "mountain medicine").The root bulbs contain diosgenin, a type of phytoestrogen (plant-based estrogen), which is a precursor for many hormones.

This tuber was popularised by Rudolf Steiner in the West because of the anthroposophical importance he attributed to the Chinese yam. We source our yams directly from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where they are grown according to strict cultivation guidelines. We exclusively offer the powder made from whole tubers of the male plants, which has been hand-milled at a distance from electromagnetic fields.

Yams

Although sweet potatoes are often referred to as yams, true yams and sweet potatoes belong to completely different families of tuber crops. There are hundreds of variants of yams native to Asia, Africa, as well as North, South and Middle America, and they are popular in cuisines all over the world. Yams may be cooked similarly to sweet potatoes, but their rougher skins and starchy flavour are distinctive.

Because our Chinese yam powder is a natural product, there may be slight variation between batches.

Region and Processing

Cultivation

Our Chinese yams are cultivated near the idyllic Tollsense Lake near Wustrow / Penzlin in the Mecklenburg Lake District of Germany. The Müritz national park is adjacent to this region. We use exclusively the tubers of male plants for our Chinese yam powder. These yams are grown according to strict specifications in quartz-rich soil so that they do not cross-pollinate with other plants.

Hand-Picked

The Chinese yam tubers are harvested by hand in November/December. The tubers are ready for harvest when the golden leaves turn brown and the vines can be easily separated from the roots.

Raw Quality

The freshly harvested Chinese yam tubers are sliced into fine discs and placed on a sieve, where they are gently dried at 38°C for 48 hours. The Chinese yams are then hand-milled in a grain mill and stored in a drying chamber supplied with warm air. This process avoids the use of electrical equipment. The finished, raw yam powder is packaged by hand into high-quality amber glass bottles.
