Larch trees (Larix decidua) are native mountain trees and grow at elevations of up to 2400m. South Tyrol offers ideal conditions for larch trees, especially in the sunny Alpine regions. Larch and Swiss pine often grow together, with larch usually doing the pioneering work and colonising barren areas. The extreme weather conditions of temperature fluctuations, strong UV radiation, winds and frost in the high elevations of South Tyrol act as a natural ‘stress cure’ for the larch, causing it to produce a very high concentration of protective substances. These include large amounts of alpha and beta pinene. The unique composition of monoterpenes, monoterpenols, sesquiterpenes and esters gives larch oil its complex balsamic-spicy fragrance. The larch has developed a very special survival strategy and is the only European conifer species that sheds its needles in winter. Only fresh branches with needles are collected between July and mid-September, chopped up and distilled immediately after harvesting using gentle steam to produce this aromatic essential oil with its fresh conifer aroma.

This family-run company has been producing essential oils and herbal products for over 110 years and has been certified organic since 1995. European Larch
The larch (Larix decidua) is a slender conifer that grows up to 40 metres tall with a conical crown. In autumn, its needles turn golden yellow to orange and then fall off – a unique feature among conifers. In spring, it refreshes us with its bright, radiant green and red female flowers. Its gigantic colour spectrum makes it the most colourful conifer. The soft needles grow in light green clusters; it forms small, egg-shaped cones. The hard wood of the larch, with its distinctive reddish-brown core, is rich in resin and weather-resistant. It is still used today in the Alpine region for the production of shingle roofs. Traditionally, larch oil has been used for bronchial and cold-related illnesses due to its anti-infectious, expectorant and mucolytic properties, and was already considered effective in the Middle Ages for wounds, splinters, pain relief and disinfection. Larch oil is also known in aromatherapy for its mood-lifting and psychologically strengthening effects and is often used to treat stress, burnout and depressive moods.
