The wild juniper shrubs thrive in the pristine nature of the Balkans, stretching to the southern Rhodopes and the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. At altitudes of 800–1600m, the shrubs are sometimes exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations, winds and drought. These climatic conditions and the barren, dry soils of the Mediterranean island offer perfect growing conditions for the plant and encourage the formation of compounds including alpha- and beta-pinene, sabinene and beta-myrcene. During the cold months between November and February, the ripe berries are carefully collected by hand and then gently processed with steam in the company's own distillery in the Valley of the Roses.

Juniper (Juniperus) is the largest genus of the cypress family (Cupressaceae) with 55 species. In the northern hemisphere, the common juniper (Juniperus communis) is widely distributed and often colonises barren habitats at altitudes of up to 4050m. This plant species grows expansively as a shrub or small tree with heights of up to 12m and can age up to 600 years. It has sharply pointed dark green to blue-green needles. The small, round berries are actually fruit cones and take 2–3 years to reach full maturity. During the ripening process, they change colour from green to dark blue to black-brown.

As an aromatic plant, juniper was valued in ancient Greece, Europe and North America as incense for ceremonial purposes and was widely used in traditional medicine in Europe and China.
