Wildcrafted 3000–3500m

Wild juniper shrubs thrive in the pristine nature of the Nepalese high mountains. At altitudes of 3000–3500m, and sometimes even up to 4500m, the shrubs are exposed to extreme temperatures, which rarely rise above freezing even in summer. This climate and the soil conditions provide them with perfect conditions for developing their ingredients such as delta-3-carene, alpha-pinene and limonene. At the end of winter, between February and April, when the plant has the highest potency, the leaves are carefully hand-picked and then gently processed with steam in the in-house distillery.

Juniper (Juniperus, "Dhupi" in Nepali) is the largest genus of the cypress family (Cupressaceae) with 55 species. In the northern hemisphere, the common juniper (Juniperus communis) is widely distributed and often colonises barren habitats at altitudes of up to 4500m. This plant species grows expansively as a shrub or small tree with heights of up to 12m and can age up to 600 years. It has sharply pointed dark green to blue-green needles. The small, round berries are actually fruit cones and take 2–3 years to reach full maturity. During the ripening process, they change colour from green to dark blue to black-brown.

As an aromatic plant, juniper was valued in ancient Greece, Europe and North America as incense for ceremonial purposes and was widely used in traditional medicine in Europe and China.
