AKG is the nitrogen-free part of the amino acid glutamine and a natural byproduct of human metabolism. AKG is involved in the citrate cycle in the mitochondria and thus in energy production; if the citrate cycle is slowed down, the breakdown of fatty acids becomes inhibited and energy production is reduced. AKG also plays a role in the balance of nitrogen and ammonia as well as in amino acid biosynthesis (i.e., the formation of proteins). The proteinogenic amino acid L-glutamine is formed from AKG and ammonia. L-glutamine is mainly used up during sports, but also during stress and infections. Alpha-ketoglutarate alone or in combination with the amino acid arginine is particularly popular amongst athletes and bodybuilders. Organs that are particularly rich in AKG are the gastrointestinal tract, liver, skeletal muscles, heart, brain and fatty tissues. Levels of AKG decrease with age. Our innovative mixture of calcium and alpha-ketoglutarate ensures that alpha-ketoglutarate remains in the digestive tract for longer, thus increasing its bioavailability in the body.
