The Test

This saliva test measures the body's progesterone levels.

As a precursor to various steroid hormones, progesterone is formed in men in small quantities in the testicles. In women, it is produced in much larger quantities in the corpus luteum. During pregnancy, the placenta takes over progesterone production. Progesterone is produced in particularly large quantities in the second half of the cycle, and is the most important counterpart of estradiol, the precursor of estrogen.

How to Use

For optimal results, the saliva test should be performed between the 19th and 21st day of the monthly cycle.

If the cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days, the test can be performed about 5-6 days before the expected start of bleeding.

If the cycle is very irregular, the test should be done in the second half of the cycle, if it can be determined.

No hormone-containing tablets or capsules should be taken for at least 12 hours before the test and no hormone-containing creams or gels should be applied for 24-48 hours before the test.

The three saliva samples are taken in the morning, 30 minutes apart. The set of instructions enclosed outlines the exact procedure which should be followed.

On the day of sample collection, the following points should be noted:

  • Take the saliva sample before or at least 30 minutes after brushing the teeth
  • Do not mix the saliva with blood (e.g. from bleeding gums) and do not use mouthwash
  • Rinse mouth with clean water before taking the sample and wait until saliva flow has normalised
  • Do not eat or drink before and while taking the saliva sample, as food may contain hormones which will skew the results
  • Follow the instructions while taking the sample

After taking the sample:

  • Return it free of charge in the enclosed mailing bag, preferably not right before the weekend or national holidays

The test kit includes:
