There are a host of important national and international olive oil competitions across the world from New York to Tokyo and in places traditionally associated with olive oil such as Italy and Spain. Among all of these competitions, the Italian Flos Olei guide is one of the most prominent and has become a point of reference for judging the world's best olive oils. Each year the 500 best oils are given grades out of 100. There are additionally 20 clearly defined award categories ranging from the oil itself, to certain characteristics, the labour, and method of cultivation. The editorial team consists of certified and experienced Italian olive oil tasters as well as their international network.

Olive farm

This family-operated olive farm dates back to 1780. The company is named for the castle that is perched upon the mountains in the county of Canena in Jaén (Andalusia). The family castle Castilla de Canena also lends its name to the olive oils. The UNESCO World Heritage cities of Úbeda and Baeza are located nearby. The olive trees grow in the Alto Guadalquivir Valley between the mountain ranges of Carzorla and Mágina. The olives are carefully harvested at ideal ripeness and quickly brought to the mill. This procedure guarantees the quality of the Castillo de Canena oils.

Region and Processing

The oils from this farm are produced with great care for the environment. Traditions surrounding the production of olive oil are respected and paired with the latest and most sustainable technologies. The trees are individually drip-irrigated and treated with specially produced natural fertiliser. The production is powered with solar energy.

Not certified, but cultivated to organic standards without the use of pesticides. Organic fertiliser, composting of all by-products, zero CO2 footprint.
