How are we different?

Our chia seeds come from traditional and controlled organic cultivation of exclusively white-flowering chia plants in Bolivia, which produce almost exclusively rare white to light beige seeds. Interestingly, white seeds are not better than black seeds in that sense, but they are better suited for certain purposes than black chia, for example for lighter dishes. There is no difference in quality between black and white seeds, but there is a difference with brown seeds. These are a sign of inferior quality, as they are harvested in an immature state and thus do not have the maximum content of ingredients. The natural diversity of the mainly white flowering Chia plants, which we source directly from Bolivia, results in a rare mixture of predominantly white seeds with only a small proportion of black seeds.

Environmentally friendly, sustainable handling without any harmful substances or chemical additives is firmly anchored in our producer's philosophy. We guarantee not only first-class quality and maximum preservation of the natural ingredients of the chia seeds, but also a resource-conserving approach to nature, freedom from pollutants and no use of pesticides.

Due to the worldwide chia boom, the plant is no longer only cultivated in the native regions of Central and South America, where an ideal subtropical climate prevails, but also in Australia and Southeast Asia. It is worth taking a closer look at chia seeds from China and Southeast Asia, as some chia plants here are contaminated with pesticides or heavy metals. Our chia comes exclusively from organic cultivation in Bolivia and is harvested and sorted by hand.

Chia

Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a plant native mainly to South and Central American countries and belongs to the sage family (Salvia). The Spanish word chía is derived from the word chian/chien in the Nahuatl language, which means "oily", or "starch".

Chia seeds were used by the Maya and Aztecs over 5,000 years ago as a medicinal plant, nutritional supplement and tonic. The smooth, oval seeds are cultivated in South America for food. Chia seeds can be consumed whole, ground into flour, swollen, sprouted, or in the form of an oil. They first found their way to Europe in the 15th century.

The annual plants, which grow up to 1.75m high, produce violet-blue or white flowers from which brown, grey, white or black seeds develop. The seeds are speckled with lighter spots. Only chia plants with white flowers can produce white to light beige seeds.

The small seeds, which are rich in fat, protein and fibre, have excellent swelling properties and a slightly nutty taste.

Region and Processing

Our chia seeds are sourced from certified organic cultivation in Bolivia. The plants thrive in loose, nitrogen- and nutrient-rich soil with plenty of sunshine. The tropical to subtropical climate of Bolivia provides the optimum growing environment for white-flowered chia plants. Only ripe seeds are hand-harvested and sorted by local farmers. The seeds are then dried in the fresh air to preserve their valuable nutrients.
