The Muhuhu plants for this special African sandalwood oil grow wild in dry lowland forests and semi-deciduous dry highland forests in the Huila, Cuando Cubango & Cunene regions of Angola. This native African plant benefits from the region's ideal growing conditions, including the light, permeable sandy soils, the well-developed volcanic clay soils and the red soils of the coastal belt, as well as the rocky soils and stony mountain slopes rising from sea level up to an altitude of 2000m. The climatic influences and soil characteristics of the different landscapes influence the development of the natural aromatic compounds of Muhuhu such as gleenol, brachylaenalone, ylangenol and alpha-amorphene. The essential oil is extracted exclusively from sustainably harvested Muhuhu heartwood, which is collected by hand by the local communities between May and August and distilled into this harmonious essential oil via a gentle steam distillation process.

Farm
We source this essential oil from a certified organic producer based in Portugal specialising in the production of essential and botanical oils. To ensure environmental and species protection, the wild plants used for the oils are sustainably harvested by hand in collaboration with local Indigenous communities and farms in Angola. The essential oil is then gently steam distilled directly after harvest at the on-site distillery. The quality control department, which is responsible for managing the laboratory and ensuring the efficacy and safety of the products, also plays a fundamental role in the manufacturing process. The expertise and passion of the whole team are ultimately reflected in the oils' fine aromas.
Muhuhu
Muhuhu (Brachilea huillensis) is a small evergreen or even deciduous shrub or tree belonging to the Asteraceae family. The scientific name, -huillensis, refers to the original habitat of this plant species, namely the Huíla region in southwest Angola. Muhuhu is a dioecious plant (it has both male and female flowers) and blooms twice per year, including at the beginning of every rainy season. The wood of the Muhuhu is used for carving, making furniture and as a building material as it is very durable and shows a naturally coloured marble grain when polished. In traditional African medicine, concentrates made from the leaves and roots of the Muhuhu tree are used to treat gastrointestinal complaints and malaria.
Aroma
Muhuhu oil has a very soft, balsamic, woody and slightly smoky scent with subtle, sweet, floral notes. The seductive aroma is perceived as calming and grounding and adds perfect depth and character to meditation blends.
