True cypress belongs to the cypress family (Cupressaceae). These evergreen trees can grow up to 20-30m tall and will take on either a thin, pointed shape or an expansive and bushy form. The leaves are scale-like and the female cones are round or egg-shaped with spines. They are native to a broad region stretching from the Mediterranean to India but today also grow across southern France and southern Europe.
