Tea Farm

The tea is harvested and produced by small, family-run farms that have been using the buds and leaves of the lao ying tree for generations.

Character

Flavour

A slightly smoky character with pleasant woody notes of maple and resin, a soft astringent tone and subtle frankincense aroma.

Leaf

Orange, white and light grey leaves and buds; slightly fuzzy.

Cup

Yellowish orange, like a sunset.

Rare Herbs

Certain herbs from Asia and Africa are among the most widely used and time-honoured teas, highly valued for their special properties. However, according to the Novel Food Regulation, teas that have not been consumed to a significant degree by humans in the EU before 1997 may not be sold as a food product in the EU unless authorised, resulting in a loss of centuries of experience from other countries and cultures. We therefore offer the rare herbs listed here only as scented herbs, potpourri or smoking materials.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Cultivation & Processing

Only the dried leaves and buds of a special species of laurel (Actinodaphne cupularis) are used for this fine and rare herbal tea. This type of evergreen tree has thick, deep green leaves and is native to the highland foothills of the Himalayas in the Chinese province of Sichuan.

Our highest grade lao ying is made from the freshest buds of wild-growing laurel trees that thrive in the forests of the Himalayan Mountains. Because the trees grow in a protected area, the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilisers is forbidden.

The buds are carefully hand-picked by local families. Only the freshest buds that have not yet opened are selected for the tea. After harvest, the buds are gently steamed for 5 minutes and then air-dried.

Single Origin:

This tea is exclusively sourced from wild-growing laurels in their native habitat in the Sichuan Himalayas.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

For hot tea: 2 heaped tsp per 200-300ml boiling water. Steep for 2 minutes. Suitable for several infusions.

For iced tea: prepare tea hot, then add ice cubes or allow to cool in the refrigerator. Can be diluted with cold water.

Packaging

High quality, airtight, resealable standing zipper pouch with 9 protective layers to preserve flavour and protect against oxidation and contamination. In addition, each bag is vacuum-sealed with a small amount of nitrogen in accordance with the best packaging standards in Japan. This ensures that the tea is protected from oxidation in the best possible way.

Recommended Teapot

The ideal teapot for lao ying is a large glass or porcelain teapot with a strainer.

Recommended Storage

Ideally store in an airtight, double-coated metal tin.
