Tea Farm

Ota Shigeki Seicha

Ota Shigeki is a small, family-run business in its third generation, which specialises in tamaryokucha and kamairicha. In 2014, the tea farmer was honoured with the Nihoncha Award, one of Japan's most prestigious tea awards. The tea fields are located in Ureshino, the region of Japan best known for tamaryokucha, and are protected by picturesque forests. No pesticides have been used on the fields since 1978.

Character

Flavour

The seed variety Benifuuki is a cross of Camellia sinensis var. sinensis and var. assamica. It forms the largest amount of special bitter substances (EGCG, ECG as well as EGCG3 "Me / -4 "Me) in the young leaves of the 1st harvest of all green tea varieties. The extremely high solar radiation on the Pacific island of Tokunoshima promotes this in a special way. The tea therefore tastes strong and noble bitter and is at the same time natural and balanced.

Benifuuki

Benifuuki tea is a relatively new type of Japanese green tea that is appreciated for its nutritional richness. Of all green teas, benifuuki has the highest concentration of catechins (EGCG, ECG, methylated catechins EGCG3"Me / -4"Me). This tea is especially robust in flavour with a distinctly bitter aroma. Premium benifuuki have a balanced flavour despite the high concentration of bitter substances (catechins).

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

Cultivation & Processing

The tea fields of Ota Shigeka are located in a mountainous area in Ureshino. The tea farmer has developed a special steaming process for his tamaryokucha that is very short and under unusually high steam pressure (0.2 Pa). As a result of this steaming process, the teas acquire a particularly aromatic aftertaste, and have a clear yamabuki shade when seen inside a cup. The tea farmer uses the same method to steam his benifuuki.

Single Origin

This tea is exclusively sourced from the above mentioned tea farm in Ureshino. Sourced directly from the tea farmer.
