These wild-growing wintergreen shrubs thrive in the vast mountain range of the Himalayas at 2400 metres in Nepal. In this high-altitude landscape with fresh and clean air, pristine soil, winds, and significant temperature fluctuations, the plants grow optimally. They develop their unique compounds like methyl and ethyl salicylate in a balanced ratio. During the harvest season, which takes place from April to May and August to November, the leaves and branches are gently collected from the wild shrubs. The aromatic essential oil is extracted using steam distillation immediately after harvest in a local distillery.

We source this essential oil from a small cooperative located in the Himalayas, in Nepal. The enterprise has been producing essential oils from indigenous plants since 2006, and unites several small farms. Each farm either cultivates its own plants to strict organic standards, or sources wildcrafted plants, sometimes growing at altitudes of up to 2,800m. The plants, which thrive in the vast, untouched nature, are harvested by hand and with sickles. They are then carried in baskets to local distilleries, where they are gently processed via steam distillation. The production process is a labour of love for the members of the cooperative, and the resulting products are of high quality. All essential oils from the producer are certified with the EU organic seal.

The evergreen wintergreen (Gaultheria fragrantissima), belonging to the heather family (Ericaceae), is native to the Indian subcontinent, extending from China to Malaysia. In the Himalayas, wintergreen is found at altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 2,700 meters. This sturdy shrub can grow up to 1.75 meters in height and bears dark green, firm leaves. Between April and May, the aromatic plant produces white, urn-shaped flowers arranged in clusters, which later develop into intensely red berries measuring about 6mm. In its natural habitat, the plant is gathered for food, medicinal purposes, and the extraction of essential oils. In India and Nepal, wintergreen holds a place as an ayurvedic medicinal plant.

The strong, minty-sweet aroma is perceived as both invigorating and relaxing. It creates space for mental flexibility and the energy to unwind, let go, and surrender to the flow of life. Furthermore, the scent imparts a sense of connection and trust.
