Tea Farm

Steinthal Estate

Founded by the German missionary Steinthal in 1852, the estate is one of the oldest in Darjeeling. The tea gardens produce exceptional Darjeeling. The Steinthal Estate converted to organic cultivation relatively early in 2001.

Character

Flavour

A very mineral Darjeeling with a pleasant creaminess. Slightly malty with a pleasant tartness and notes of a fruity, dry champagne

Leaf

FTGFOP1: (Special) Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe

Cup

Vibrant dark yellow

Black Tea

Black tea is the most oxidised form of tea. In contrast to green tea, the oxidation of the leaves after harvest and withering is not stopped with heat, but rather further facilitated by intensive rolling of the leaves, which breaks open cell walls and exposes the enzymes responsible for oxidation. Over the course of this process the leaves change from green to black and a full-bodied and broad aroma develops. The cup is often orange or red, which is where the Chinese name for this tea (hong cha, meaning "red tea") comes from.

Cultivation

Location, Cultivation, Processing

The Steinthal Estate is located near the city of Darjeeling and encompasses more than 1,600ha. The tea garden grows the China hybrid cultivar which is known for producing fine green first flushes with especially fresh and fruity notes. The estate is quite picturesque and has a view of the nearby Singtom Estate. Steinthal lies along the Rungeet River which connects the tea garden with the Teesta River.

Single Origin

This tea is exclusively sourced from the above mentioned tea farm in Darjeeling, India. Sourced directly from the tea estate.
