How are we different?

Our chia seeds are sourced from traditional, certified organic cultivation of white-flowering chia plants, which produce almost exclusively rare white to light beige seeds. Although white chia seeds are better suited to lighter dishes than black chia seeds, there is no difference in quality between the two shades. However, brown chia seeds are of inherently lower quality than both, as they have been harvested before they have had the chance to develop their full nutrient profile. The natural diversity of the white-flowering chia plants, which are cultivated in Bolivia, results in a unique blend of predominantly white seeds, with a small number of black seeds.

Our producer's philosophy aligns with our own. The chia seeds undergo environmentally friendly, sustainable processing without the use of harmful substances. We guarantee not only first-class quality and optimal nutrient preservation, but also a resource-conscious approach to nature which encompasses the avoidance of pollutants and pesticides.

Due to a rising global demand for chia seeds, the plant is no longer cultivated solely in its native regions of Central and South America, where an ideal subtropical climate exists, but also in Australia and Southeast Asia. Our chia seeds are sourced exclusively from organic cultivation in Bolivia, and are harvested and sorted by hand.

The chia seeds are shipped in airtight packaging to Germany, where they are freshly ground into a fine flour. This allows us to ensure optimal quality and freshness.

Chia Seeds

Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a plant native mainly to South and Central American countries and belongs to the sage family (Salvia). The Spanish word chía is derived from the word chian/chien in the Nahuatl language, which means "oily", or "starch".

Chia seeds were used by the Maya and Aztecs over 5,000 years ago as a medicinal plant, nutritional supplement and tonic. The smooth, oval seeds are cultivated in South America for food. Chia seeds can be consumed whole, ground into flour, swollen, sprouted, or in the form of an oil. They first found their way to Europe in the 15th century.

The annual plants, which grow up to 1.75m high, produce violet-blue or white flowers from which brown, grey, white or black seeds develop. The seeds are speckled with lighter spots. Only chia plants with white flowers can produce white to light beige seeds.

Chia flour is a protein-rich, high-fibre ingredient for cooking and baking. It is suitable for use as a gluten-free flour or as an egg substitute.

Region and Processing

Our chia seeds are sourced from certified organic cultivation in Bolivia. The plants thrive in loose, nitrogen- and nutrient-rich soil with plenty of sunshine. The tropical to subtropical climate of Bolivia provides the optimum growing environment for white-flowered chia plants. Only ripe seeds are hand-harvested and sorted by local farmers. The seeds are then dried in the fresh air to preserve their valuable nutrients.

To produce the chia flour, the seeds are pressed and separated from the chia oil. The seeds are then gently ground into a fine flour.

The partial de-oiling of the seeds is necessary because the unsaturated omega fatty acids contained within the seeds quickly spoil and would adversely affect the shelf-life and flavour of the flour. The mechanically pressed oil can be used as cold-pressed chia oil.
