The mandarin trees thrive on a certified organic farm located on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. In this warm climate, with Mediterranean winds and plenty of sunshine, the trees have optimal growing conditions which allow for the full development of their aromas, including alpha- and beta-pinene, in a balanced ratio. The fruits are carefully hand-harvested from December to March. After having been sorted and cleaned, the fresh peels are cold-pressed on-site.
We source this essential oil from a small, family-run producer based in Sicily. The company was founded in the 1970s and specialises in the cultivation of citrus fruits. They first began cultivation according to organic standards in 2002, but have adapted and expanded their land since then. The mineral-rich soils and the Mediterranean climate, as well as the producer's many years of experience, combine to create high-quality essential oils. The essential oils are extracted via cold pressing in our own facility, and are certified organic.
The mandarin belongs to the citrus family (Rutaceae). Mandarin plants can grow as trees or large, thorny shrubs. In the spring, the plant blooms fragrant, white blossoms in small clusters between 2 and 4cm wide. The small fruits grow from autumn into the new year and can reach sizes of up to 8cm in diameter. While mandarins are endemic to Southeast Asia, they are also cultivated in the Mediterranean region. The essential oil is extracted from the mandarin peels as well as the fresh twigs and leaves. The oil produced from this new growth is also known as petitgrain.
The fruity-fresh aroma has an uplifting, invigorating, anxiety-relieving and relaxing effect. The scent promotes joy and inspires creativity.
