Chinshu-gama 椿秀窯

Blending traditional Hagi styles with modern manufacturing techniques, Chinshu-gama specialises in everyday, contemporary Hagi-yaki tableware with gentle colours and textures.

Kumidashi 汲み出し

The Kumidashi is a short, light, handle-free teacup traditionally used to serve Sencha during Senchadō: the Japanese leaf tea ceremony (as opposed to Sadō for matcha powdered green tea). Kumidashi with mouths that spread outwards are particularly suitable for high-grade teas as the shape helps to amplify the aroma. Often sold in sets of five, Kumidashi are the choice of teacup when entertaining guests.

Hagi-yaki 萩焼

Produced in the city of Hagi in the Yamaguchi (historically Nagato) prefecture, Hagi wares are known for their simple, rustic shapes and delicate translucent glazes that allow the beauty of the earthy clay to shine through. Like many pottery styles in Japan, the origins of Hagi-yaki are Korean, and were developed in the 17th century. As a legacy of its Korean roots, Hagi wares often have a notch cut into the foot of tea bowls, cups and pots, known as Kiri-Koudai (切り高台 "cut foot"). It is said that Hagi wares go through seven stages of transformation as tea oils seep into the small crackles at the surface, causing it to slowly change colour over time.

Care

When using Hagi ware for the first time, soak the item in water overnight to remove dust and odours from the packing material. Since Hagi wares easily absorb moisture, make sure to let dry completely after washing and before storing to avoid the risk of mould developing. After each use, wash the items by hand with hot water and refrain from using washing-up liquid whenever possible, then allow to air dry naturally. As the base of Hagi items are usually unglazed, please place a coaster underneath to avoid scratching table tops; if the base is too rough, it can be lightly filed with sandpaper. Do not put in microwave or oven.
