Glenburn Estate

The internationally renowned and prize-winning Glenburn Tea Estate was founded in 1859 by a Scottish company. The estate includes an integrated boutique hotel in the British vineyard style with a majestic view of Mount Kangchenjunga, the 3rd highest mountain peak in the world.

For 5 generations the Prakash family, which also owns a tea estate in Kongea, Assam, has managed Glenburn. The hotel was fully restored and reopened in 2002, and has since become a highly desirable holiday destination. Refreshing walks through the picturesque landscape and tastings of harvest-fresh teas are just two of the benefits of a stay at the Glenburn boutique hotel.

International organisations such as the Rainforest Alliance and the Ethical Tea Partnership have recognised Glenburn's ethical and ecological standards of tea production. Since 2015 the estate has also pursued pesticide-free cultivation. In addition to the socially responsible practices of the company, the Prakash family also donates to local educational programs and public libraries in the region.

"Darjeeling" is a protected geographic designation which ensures that only tea grown on 1 of 87 certified tea estates in the region can be sold as Darjeeling tea.

This tea is directly sourced from the Glenburn Estate in Darjeeling, which was founded by a Scottish company in 1859 and is now run by the Prakash family as both a tea plantation and boutique hotel. Glenburn Autumn Oolong is made in small batches at the end of the harvest season from hand-picked and selected leaves and buds. The medium degree of oxidation lends the oolong a particularly fruity and soft aroma. The flavour is deep and complex with distinct floral notes. The whole leaves unfurl during steeping.

Black Tea

Black tea is the most oxidised form of tea. In contrast to green tea, the oxidation of the leaves after harvest and withering is not stopped with heat, but rather further facilitated by intensive rolling of the leaves, which breaks open cell walls and exposes the enzymes responsible for oxidation. Over the course of this process the leaves change from green to black and a full-bodied and broad aroma develops. The cup is often orange or red, which is where the Chinese name for this tea (hong cha, meaning "red tea") comes from.

Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Cultivation & Processing

The 750ha-large Glenburn Estate resides in a river valley between the Rungeet and Rung Dung rivers at the foot of the Himalayas in a protected natural forest. The estate is managed by the Prakash family and maintained with the help of 350 tea pickers from 8 of the surrounding villages. During the 9-month harvest period, the tea pickers work in the early morning hours before the afternoon heat sets in, and the tea leaves are then processed immediately in the afternoon. Roughly 1,000 leaves are needed for 1 pound of tea.

The fresh first flush leaves have a high moisture degree of 75% that evaporates during the strictly monitored withering process when air is blown between the leaves. The tea is machine-rolled to open up the leaves, expose the leaf juices, and thus facilitate fermentation. The tea is fermented for a relatively short time, under constant supervision to ensure the full development of the flavour bouquet, which is light, fresh, floral and has a touch of citrus. In the last stage the tea is fully dried in an oven for 10-12 minutes and hand-packed into tea crates.

Each tea is made from a single day's harvest from a specific harvest season: moonshine, first flush, second flush, monsoon, or autumn flush. Each tea therefore has its own character that is influenced by the prevailing weather conditions and is noticeably different from a standardised "single malt" flavour bouquet.

The Glenburn Darjeeling is a hybrid of the China and Clonal varieties and is orthodoxly fermented without mechanical cutting of the leaves (CTC: crush, tear, curl).

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2 heaped tsp per 200-300ml (80°C) water. Steep for 2-3 minutes.

Recommendation of the tea estate:

2.5g per 200ml (90-95°C) water. Steep for 3-4 minutes.
