Chakoboshi 茶こぼし

The Chakoboshi is a container for collecting excess tea, water and leaves: such as hot water used to warm up the Kyusu, teacups or Chawan bowls, tea left in the pot before re-steeping or leaves that won't be brewed further. These slop bowls can be made of wood, ceramic and/or metal, with or without a lid, and are also known as Kensui (建水 “waste water”), particuarly within Sadō: the traditional Japanese matcha ceremony. Chakoboshi that have a lid with drainage holes (or Mizukiri 水切り) are used in the Senchadō tea ceremony where high grade Sencha or Gyokuro is served. Although most households these days will not have a Chakoboshi, they are still often found as part of tea sets in traditional Japanese Ryokan inns. To use, simply pour liquids through the drainage holes in the lid, and remove the lid when discarding tea leaves.

Care

Hand wash with warm water and soft cloth or sponge, using washing-up liquid when necessary. Towel dry or leave to air dry naturally with lid off.
